John D. Clemson

John Clemson came to a profession in preservation following six years in mutual-fund operations at Eaton Vance in Boston. He received a BA in German Language and Philosophy from Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts in 1985. In 1993 he obtained a Master's degree in Preservation Studies from Boston University.

In addition to his activities as Sales Associate at American Landmarks, John provides a wide range of services including the documentation of historic resources, restoration guidance and marketing strategies for historic properties.Recent projects he has undertaken for the firm include historic certifications for Federal investment tax credits, National Register nominations and developer packages for the Massachusetts Land Bank's conveyance of one million square feet of National Register buildings at the former Camp Devens U.S. Army base. For the Boston Landmarks Commission, he completed a written evaluation of existing survey documentation procedures, and a neighborhood-by-neighborhood preservation plan, including recommendations for further survey, protection designation and public relations. The recommendations to the B.L.C. were accepted by the city and incorporated into its preservation plan.

For the towns of Acton, Groton and Stowe Massachusetts, he completed design guidelines for historic property owners. The guidelines were accepted and implemented by the historical commissions in each town.

John has studied with some well known experts in the fields of preservation and architectural history, including Abbott Lowell Cummings, former director of the Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities, with whom he worked in first-period framed buildings in Massachusetts and Connecticut.

John lives in the town of Winchester with his wife and son and daughter.
