This outstanding Federal country seat was for over five generations
the home of Aldens descending from a master joiner brought by Revolutionary
War General Henry Knox to construct his mansion in nearby Thomaston. Carving
elaborate woodwork for his own house inspired by English pattern books,
Alden achieved a level of detail equal to any we have seen north of Portsmouth.
Recently professionally restored, the thirteen room house boasts eight
fireplaces, each with a distinctive period mantle. Three outbuildings include
a c. 1805 store, a cooperage shop, and a magnificent 40'x80' three level
barn. The Alden House is situated on over 50 acres of gardens, meadow,
pine grove and upland woods just fifteen minutes by car from Camden and
Rockport.
