About Us

Frederick W. Lyman

Frederick Lyman, founder and president of American Landmarks, has been a licensed real estate professional specializing in significant period properties for over 35 years. He graduated cum laude from Bowdoin College, and subsequently received an MA from Harvard University in land use and cultural resource planning. In 1979, Frederick established American Landmarks to provide specialized brokerage and preservation-based consulting services for historically and architecturally significant properties.

Frederick is considered an authority on tax-advantaged restoration, establishing and administering Federal and local historic districts, individual and district nominations to the National Register of Historic Places and estate and investment planning for real estate portfolios and family trusts. Through American Landmarks, he pioneered the specialized, targeted marketing of historic and period properties for which the firm is widely known.

Former Executive Director of North Carolina’s Historic Salisbury Foundation, Frederick has also served as Vice Chair, Overseers, for Strawbery Banke Museum of Portsmouth (NH), on the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s legislative task force, as president of historical societies in Winchester, MA and Washington, ME. He was also formerly Chair of the Arlington (MA) Historic District Commissions and a member of the Winchester, MA Zoning Board of Appeals. He formerly served as chairman on the Winchester Historical Commission and on the Gloucester, MA Historic District Commission. He has served as an adjunct faculty member at Harvard’s Graduate School of Design and as a jurist for Boston University’s Preservation Studies Program.

Alene W. Reich

Alene W. Reich holds a M.S. in Architecture from Texas A&M University and a B.A. in American Cultural Studies from Bates College in Lewiston, ME. In her consulting career Alene focused on historic district planning and research. Her work developing a heritage tourism plan for Hearne, TX was recognized for excellence by the Texas Chapter of the American Planning Association.

Alene has enjoyed her hands-on experiences in the conservation of historic building fabric and finishes . She has been a faux-finisher with Elite Artisans in Baltimore and has worked on projects for the U.S. Capitol Visitor’s Center and for the Executive Office Building of the White House. Alene is a member of the Association for Preservation Technology (APT). One of her recent papers was published in the organization’s Fall 2006 Journal.

Alene is a member of the National Trust, Historic New England and many other preservation organizations. She prides herself on providing clients of American Landmarks with the results-oriented energy and knowledge that only a dedicated preservationist can offer.
